Stranded in the Kitchen
Brass
Interviewed by Mike Archibald
You have listened to them on record. You have paid to see them live, unless you're broke and watched them on YouTube. I am here to force feed you your next obsession: learning about your favorite band's skills in the kitchen. Learn where your favorite artists get all of the energy to light up the stage or create a new masterpiece record.
This time around we get feisty with Pennsylvania post-hardcore fiends Brass, who have just (literraly) hand-crafted their latest album Set & Drift. DIY is not dead, and we join "Combo Commander" Jason Bucci for a quick jaunt through his kitchen.
1. What is your favorite type of ethnic cuisine?
That really depends on scenario. As far as eating out, I like Thai or Indian but only because I'm not very versed in making those styles at home. As far as cooking, I'd have to choose Italian because I've gotten so many old family recipes lately, it's awesome to use them to cook. Plus, ya know, drinking lots of wine while cooking Italian at home and wearing a tight wifebeater with my chest hair poking out is a really great way to live life.
2. If you had to choose one final four course meal, what would it be?
It would definitely be a weird mix of food. Maybe start off with some crab springrolls with some type of honey-lime-ginger sauce, followed by a gigantic salad with arugula, onion, olives, feta cheese, tomatoes and a mustard vinaigrette. Then I'd have a a white pizza with ricotta and spinach. For dessert, I'd have a tofu cheesecake.
3. What is your favorite food to have on the road?
I know that the entire band is into these crazy new Combos that have come out lately. They have Cheeseburger Combos that taste exactly like a McDonald's cheeseburger. I mean, down to the onion and ketchup and mustard flavor. It's amazing. There's also a bacon, egg and cheese on a muffin Combos and they taste exactly like a breakfast sandwich. Combos is on the cutting edge of flavor processing.
4. Is there any food that you like to eat before shows?
Again the combos. We have been bringing bags to every show and sharing them with people in order to convert them over to our Combo Cult. Did you know that a person who eats a big bag of Combos in one-sitting is called a Combo Commander? We are all Combo Commanders.
5. What is your favorite condiment and why?
I'd have to say vinegar. I like malt vinegar on my fries, vinegar on my salads and vinegar on my sandwiches. White, red, balsamic, etc. Vinegar is always a big selling point for me when looking at flavors. Mm, salt and vinegar chips! (either English or American takes on chips). Plus so many condiments have vinegar in them, it's like the building block of condiment life!
