Stuck on the (Wrong?) Coast
"Music Sucks, Let's Be Seen"
By Dany Sloan

Stranded in Stereo's editor has jumped ship and is living in Los Angeles now! The west coast is a weird place, and it's even stranger when you're a native east coaster. Read the new column "Stuck on the (Wrong?) Coast" for all of Dany's observations while he is on what very well could be the wrong coast.

There is a reason why the rest of the country does not like Los Angeles, and it was all over the MGMT gig at the Henry Fonda Theatre last night. First off, the band was good, although they did wait until the end of the set to play all of the "hits." But the band really isn't the point -- the crowd
is.

LA hipsters might be some of the worst people I have ever encountered at a
gig. There were so many bad fashion choices, like the gladiator sandal,
fedora/pageboy hats and the resurgence of hippie fashion. There's a reason
that the hippies didn't change the world, and it all starts with their
choice of clothes and drug intake. And all of this was before I even
entered the venue.

Once inside and MGMT was on, most people couldn't be bothered to look up
from their BlackBerrys or their conversations. I thought the point of going
to a show was to watch the band and enjoy the music, but I guess this is all
an exercise in being seen. It doesn't matter who is playing, just as long
as there are a lot of people around to see your stupid fedora.

Probably the rudest behavior last night was the smoking. As most of you
know, smoking is not allowed in most LA public establishments, including
bars and clubs, which is absolutely amazing for those of us that don't like
killing ourselves or smelling like an ashtray.

I am not going to infringe on anyone's right to do what they want to do, but
if someone wants to smoke, go to your Silver Lake apartment and do it.
Please do not violate laws and do it next to me, especially when it's been
proven that second-hand smoke is harmful. If you want to smoke near me,
then I'll just grab your name and address and then give you a call when I
develop asthma, or even worse, lung cancer.

So Los Angeles, please stop being such a giant pain in the ass at gigs. I
know MGMT is big now, so that means people that look like the cast of The
Hills buying their records, but I am fine with that. Just show a little
respect, ok? Tonight I am going to see Foals at the El Rey Theatre, so
maybe the crowd will be better behaved.
