Future Features: The Week in Comics for 01/21/09
By Lory Gil

What with all the great new comics coming out already this year, I sure do hope that our new president follows through with that economic stimulus package. Otherwise I’ll have to start selling pictures of my bare feet in order to feed my addiction. Next week alone will cause me to break into my piggybank (poor lil’ Hamlet). So, go round up your couch change and check out this week’s Future Features.

Dark Avengers #1 (Marvel Comics)
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis, Artist:Mike Deodato
The Dark Reign has finally arrived. Fanboys, eat your hearts out! Marvel’s newest event that will supposedly chance the whole universe starts with this issue, which will uncover the identities of the Dark Avenger’s. Yes, that’s right, another multi-issue cross-over event for you to spend all your lawn mowing money on. The majors just love to get your greenbacks! This event seems pretty fun though. It’s all about baddies. I mean, it’s called Dark Reign fer crissake!

ENDERS SHADOW BATTLE SCHOOL #2 (Marvel Comics)
Writer: Mike Carey, Artist: Sebastian Fiumara, Cover: Timothy Green IIEnder’s Shadow, the comic, much like Ender’s Game, the comic, is brilliant. The story is nearly word-for-word from the original novelette. “Why read a comic that is exactly the same as the original book?” you ask? Because it’s awesome, that’s why. It is like the first time you read the novelization of Star Wars. I just can’t wait until the expanded Enderverse finally takes off. If you haven’t read Ender’s Shadow yet, this is a great way to get a CliffsNotes-type version of it.

Highlander Origins: Kurgan #1 (Dynamite Entertainment)
Writer: Brandon Jerwa, Artist: Carlos Rafael, Cover: Stephen SegoviaDoes anyone remember the Kurgan from the Highlander movie (anyone except rabid fans of the genre that is)? Well, he was the immortal nemesis of the Highlander himself, Connor MacCleod. In the post-movie EU of the Highlander, fans learned all about the Kurgan and his evil ways. Highlander Origins is a two-issue story that tells all about the Kurgan’s tormented past. If you liked the Highlander Movie, then you’ll love the Highlander T.V. series. And if you loved the Highlander T.V. series, then you’ll love this comic. Oh, and you should probably get out more.

Madman Atomic Comics #13 (Image Comics)
Writer: Mike Allred, Artists: Mike & Laura Allred
Madman’s life was coming together very nicely. Joe was back to her old self. Metal Man was on his way to resurrection. But things went haywire, and now Madman has to perform impossible feats in order to get his life back to the way it was. As usual, the Allred couple has written an amazing and exciting story of the hero with a hidden past. The art and writing work together perfectly to bring you a hyper-surreal story that is filled to the brim with action and intrigue.

Ruins #1 (Marvel Comics)
Writer: Warren Ellis, Artist: Cliff & Terese Nielsen and Chris Moeller
Oh Hell Yeah! I don’t think I have spoken of the brilliance of Mr. Warren Ellis yet. The man is a crazy genius. I pretty much worship the man. Almost everything he writes is about corruption and bizarre biotechnology in the future. Ruins is only slightly different than his usual M.O.. In this version of the Marvel Universe, things are really, really bad and the heroes aren’t making it any better. Marvel made history once before when they let Robert Kirkman write their heroes as Zombies, let’s see what they’ll let Ellis get away with.

World of Warcraft #15 (DC Comics)
Writer: Walter Simonson, Artists: Mike Bowden & Jerome Moore, Cover: Jon Buran & Tony Washington
I’ve received a lot of guff from my friends regarding this comic. My WoW-playing friends don’t like it because Horde and Alliance interact with each other. My comic-reading friends don’t like it because they don’t want to associate themselves with something as nerdy as a MMORPG story. Well, I love this comic. The art is fantastic. The plot is fun and exciting. The characters are interesting and clever. What else could one ask for? I think the people who pooh-pooh this comic are just too cool for school. I’m not ashamed of my love for World of Warcraft, and I’m not going to hide it anymore!!
