Future Features: The Week in Comics for 11/19
By Lory Gil
This week in comics is a light week for comic buying. Some weeks are like that. Sometimes you buy five titles. Sometimes you buy 25 titles. So, I’ll just focus on three. Ender’s Game: Battle School #3, Samurai-Legend #3 and Invincible #55 are the top of the crop this time. So, get your pull list ready and check out my favorite Future Features for the week of November 19, 2008.
Ender’s Game: Battle School #2
Writers: Christopher Yost & Orson Scott Card, Artist: Pasqual Ferry
Although Orson Scott Card is listed as a writer here, he actually left the comic adaptation up to the talented Mr. Yost. Christopher Yost adapts this story almost perfectly. Nearly all of the dialogue within the pages of this comic is verbatim from the novel, which is why Card deserves some writing credit for this story. The first issue rekindled my love of the brilliant sci-fi adventure, introducing us to Ender, his family, his anger and Colonel Graff. The second issue will bring Ender to the rigorous Battle School where he will learn how to play the game, not just the game in the battle room, but the game of adults versus kids. This comic is not for those who have never read the original novel. The missing subtleties would just confuse the uninformed reader. But, if you love Ender’s Game, you will love this version as well.
Samurai-Legend #3
Writer: Jean-Francois Di Giorgio, Artist: Frederic Genet
Marvel recently teamed up with French comic distributor Soleil Comics to bring us four of Europe’s more popular titles for the first time in English. So far, Marvel and Soleil have not disappointed. Sky Doll and Universal War One were outstanding comics and Samurai-Legend is following the trend with stride. The story revolves around Takeo, a wondering samurai (is there any other kind) and his fight against the 13th Prophet while trying to protect the Emperor. In this issue, Takeo and his companions are faced with impossible odds as the evil clans wishing to overthrow the Emperor swell in number. The art is realistic and the story flow nicely. Pick this and all of Soleil’s comics up at your local comic shop. It is important to support this endeavor s o that Marvel will see that we want more.
Invincible #55
Writer: Robert Kirkman, Artists: Ryan Ottley & FCO Plascencia
You will quickly learn that I absolutely worship Robert Kirkman. Almost everything he has written has been absolutely astounding (including Astounding Wolf-man). In the Kirkman Universe, Invincible has been dealing with the typical turmoil of being a teenager in love… with superpowers…and an alien half-brother… and a father who tried to overthrow Earth. Ok, so it’s not that typical. This issue brings Invincible’s father, Omni-man, to the day of his execution. Allen the Alien has been working on a way to rescue Omni-man and he’s ready to go.
