The Duke Spirit Live
@ the Music Hall of Williamsburg – Brooklyn, NY 02/12/08
By Dany Sloan
Following up a successful debut is one of the hardest tricks in the game, but with Neptune, The Duke Spirit has done what so many bands have died trying to do -- make an album that eclipses their debut release. With their second effort, the band has made a record that is truly an album, one that deserves to be listened to from Point A to Point B.
But the bad news for the band was that they failed to take this energy into their recent show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, and I am willing to write this one off. Whether it be jetlag or just a bad night, the band didn't deliver the same way they have in the past. Their set was made up of mostly new songs, and maybe part of the reason their set didn't connect was because I wasn't familiar with the new tune, but even "Love is an Unfamiliar Name" seemed a bit tepid.
For those of you that haven't seen the band before, don't let this be a deterrant. I've seen them several times and they are usually a fighting and fit unit, but it looks like jetlag can destroy even the best of us.
